Dr. Shiels understands the complexity of weight and wellness therefore uses an alternative approach called HAES (Health At Every Size). HAES works towards deemphasizing weight loss as the end goal while reducing weight stigma of being categorized as “overweight” or “obese.” As a society, we are often taught to restrict major food groups but we now know that restriction inevitability leads to overeating and binge-eating. And good news, that’s normal! Eating foods we once called “unhealthy” or “junk” results in shame and guilt and perpetuates the restrict/binge cycle. Dr. Shiels can guide patients in learning the principles of Intuitive Eating and committing to food freedom.
